Seminar: Tulips, Cheese, Windmills & Me – 15 May
This free seminar delves into Dutch culture and customs, introduces aspects of the Dutch language and what to consider when learning it, and offers a chance to meet and mingle over drinks and snacks.
One of the most interesting parts of settling into a new country is exploring its set of customs – all those unspoken social rules that seem obvious to those that live there, but are new (and sometimes baffling!) to newcomers. This seminar introduces new arrivals to the Netherlands to the way Dutch social life works.
There will be two presentations – the first one is by ACCESS and highlights five key topics that are essential for internationals to know, with a focus on social and cultural issues instead of practical or official matters. This is followed by a presentation from Koentact Language School, an IN Amsterdam partner, about five important cultural aspects related to learning the Dutch language.
Everyday scenarios
The presentations are followed by a panel discussion exploring more topics relating to Dutch culture and customs. Attendees can submit questions in advance or ask them during the session. The discussion includes real-life scenarios and questions, such as how to introduce yourself to your new neighbours, what to expect if you’re invited to a birthday party, and other situations and cultural nuances.
Meet the other attendees
After the panel discussion, there will be an opportunity to meet the panellists and network with other attendees over snacks and drinks. The event is free to attend and, as spots are limited, we ask that you sign up in advance.
