The Hague Local Election Night – 10 March

On Wednesday 18 March 2026, The Hague will hold its municipal elections – a key moment for everyone who calls the city home to help shape its future. Over 70,000 international residents in The Hague may be eligible to vote in the local elections. The elections are a chance to influence decision-making in your new hometown.
Who is allowed to vote in the municipal elections?
You can vote in the municipal elections if you meet the following requirements:
- You are 18 years or older on 18 March 2026;
- You are registered in a Dutch municipality on 2 February 2026;
- You have Dutch nationality, the nationality of another EU member state, or have been living legally in the Netherlands for an uninterrupted period of at least 5 years as of 2 February 2026.
Can I vote if I do not have Dutch nationality?
Internationals may vote in the municipal elections in The Hague if they meet the national eligibility rules:
- EU nationals;
- Non-EU nationals, who have had a residence permit for 5 years without interruption as of 2 February 2026, including residence permits of the IND and MFA (diplomats) if they are working for an intergovernmental organisation;
- Employees of embassies and consulates (and their family members) do not have the right to vote (except if they have Dutch nationality).
EU and Non-EU nationals working for international organisations are eligible to vote. Non-NL nationals working for embassies and consulates are not.
How do I vote?
- If you are allowed to vote, a voting pass will be sent to your home address. You will receive your voting pass by 2 March 2026 (in The Hague). If you have not received your voting pass, you can request a new one. Deadlines apply!
- To be able to vote, you need to bring both your voting pass and a valid form of identification: your passport, a Dutch or EU/EEA/Swiss ID card, Dutch or EU/EEA driving licence, a residence permit or MFA card. Your proof of identity may be expired for a maximum of 5 years.
- You can find all polling stations and more practical information on the website of your municipality: The Hague, Delft, Rijswijk, Leidschendam-Voorburg or Wassenaar.
Who can I vote for?
In The Hague you can vote for 20 political parties. 487 candidates are competing for 45 seats on the city council. Some parties have translated their political programmes. You can also use translation apps or AI to translate. Kieskompas is a tool to help compare statements from political parties.
